Workshop on Sound change

Conference call

The goal of the workshop is to examine current approaches to sound change from a variety of theoretical and methodological perspectives, with an emphasis on the initiation of sound change. It is intended as a meeting point for exchanging ideas and sharing analytical techniques, as well as for stimulating discussion and collaborative efforts. Dialectal and social phonetic variation, the role of perceptual and articulatory factors, analysis techniques, models of phonologisation, articulatory modelling, as well as typological patterns of change will be considered.

The workshop will consist of plenary talks, invited talks, discussion sessions and poster sessions.  The following speakers have been invited to give a plenary talk:

Joan L. Bybee, University of New Mexico
Gerry Docherty, Newcastle University
Louis M. Goldstein, University of Southern California and Haskins Laboratories
John J. Ohala, University of California at Berkeley
